Applying for funding from the National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is comprised of 27 Institutes and Centers with an annual budget of $37 billion (FY 2018). Approximately 80% of NIH’s budget is awarded, via 50,000 grants per year, to researchers and institutions working across the entire spectrum of health and disease research. NIH funding comprise the majority of sponsored research monies received by GUMC.

The NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts is the complete listing of all funding opportunity announcements, as well as updates to grant policies and guidelines. A weekly Table of Contents is also issued via email with links to that week’s publications. Subscribe to the Table of Contents to receive the latest from NIH.

Find Previous Funding and Program Officers

Your preparation for submitting to NIH may also include finding similar previously funded projects, as well as likely program officials in your subject areas. RePORTER is a database of funded research, searchable by prinicpal investigator, institution, keyword, institute, and more. Publication search is also available.

To find program officials, Matchmaker searches abstracts or other scientific text, to find similar projects and the program officers, institutes, and centers assigned to them. 

NIH Application Guidelines

NIH makes a number of resources available to prospective grantees. The Application Guide contains up to date information on requirements for writing your application for NIH, the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The Forms Library contains templates and instructions for a number of proposal components and project reports. 

Applying to NIH

RDS works closely with GUMC faculty, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to submit applications to NIH. To begin an application, contact your department’s RDS proposal specialist or request an appointment.
